Within the University of Edinburgh, as well as GAIL Director, Subramanian serves as the Director of the Centre for AI in Assistive Autonomy, which was established with funding from his UKRI Turing AI World-Leading Researcher Fellowship. He was the of Director of the Institute of Perception, Action and Behaviour in the School of Informatics from 2020 to 2024. Additionally, he holds lead roles in several multi-university initiatives, including the UKRI AI CDT in Dependable and Deployable AI for Robotics and the AI Hub for Productive Research and Innovation in Electronics.

Subramanian joined the University of Edinburgh in 2007. Prior to this, he completed his PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. He also holds a Master of Engineering from the University of Virginia and a Bachelor of Engineering (with Distinction) from Bangalore University, India. Furthermore, he has held visiting academic positions at the University of Rome "La Sapienza" and Stanford University.

Between 2017 and 2020, Subramanian held the position of Vice President at Five AI, a technology start-up company specialising in autonomous vehicles. He continued to serve as Scientific Advisor from 2021 to 2023, during which time the company was acquired by Bosch GmbH.
