GAIL Fellows and seed funding open for applications

University of Edinburgh's Generative AI Laboratory has announced exciting opportunities for researchers to become GAIL Fellows and kick-start pioneering research in Generative Artificial Intelligence through seed funding.

This initiative is part of ongoing efforts from the Generative AI Laboratory (GAIL) to expand its impact through societal benefits and economic growth, leveraging the University’s cutting-edge research in AI, machine learning, and natural language processing.

Fellowships

GAIL is inviting faculty and postdoctoral researchers to apply to become a GAIL Fellow. Selected Fellows will have the opportunity to deeply engage with the Generative AI community in Edinburgh and help shape its future.

This collage pictures AI as a building, or even a complex of multiple architectures, with different rooms, floors and windows. These are held together by a grid and are connected through a language. The image tries to communicate the complexity and plurality of these worlds, but also reminds that they are not a living being, rather a human made structure; hollow with no life in it.

Fellows will gain access to a variety of resources and benefits, including GPU-based computers, research engineering support, and opportunities to participate in seminars and workshops. They will also benefit from dedicated communications support from the GAIL team.

Seed funding

The interim co-directors of GAIL – Mirella Lapata, Kev Dhaliwal and Jane Hillston – are seeking proposals for short-term projects that would benefit from seed funding.

Proposals will be considered on all aspects of Generative AI from across diverse fields – such as healthcare, fintech, and sustainability – taking into account their social, ethical, political and economic implications.

With a budget of approximately £200,000, the seed funding is intended to support at least ten projects that promote innovative research across multiple disciplines at the University.

Previous funding rounds have supported projects such as workshops on efficient large language models (LLMs) and the development of finance-related datasets.

Applications

Applications to become a GAIL Fellow will be accepted on a bi-monthly basis starting 1 November 2024. Proposals for seed funding must be submitted by 5pm on 13 November 2024.
